Based out of Switzerland, VyprVPN is an extremely secure, effective and user friendly Tier 1 VPN company that offers three different plans for its users’ varied needs.
The company is part of the Golden Frog Internet Freedom Consortium, which has been in the VPN game since 1994, so they have a long tradition of excellence.
VyprVPN also has a wide reach, with over 700 servers in 70 countries, which are spread across 6 continents.
Though VyprVPN has global options, there are still only single servers in some hotspot locations, like Thailand, which could cause a lot of annoyance if that server is down or performing at mediocre speeds.
However, Vypr has a pretty impressive global distribution, so you’re likely to pick up on neighboring servers- I wouldn’t worry too much about connection availability or speeds.
VyprVPN is also lauded for having an amazing customer service team, which I would definitely agree with, though you probably won’t really bond with your Live Chat representative as chat queries are reviewed prior to answering.
In addition to 24/7/365 email and live chat support, VyprVPN also lays out a pretty useful FAQ section (although I don’t know very many people who are patient enough to parse through it) and an online forum where other users can post solutions to issues they’ve encountered.
This is all well and good if you’re into DIY, but I like asking questions and receiving answers and VyprVPN is always lightning fast in this respect.
VyprVPN does offer a three day free trial, which is a tad stingy (come on, minimum should be a week!). But…they probably do this because their program is great and few people decide they don’t want to opt in.
Additionally- and this is a bit annoying, VyprVPN does NOT offer refunds. At all. In their words, not mine: “no refunds will be given under any circumstances.” So, you’ve got to like it…or else! This is sort of odd to me, but I was in no way interested in a refund because this is one of my top 3 most-used VPNs.
It’s awesome, and I’ll explain why.
VyprVPN offers two separate plans for users. VyprVPN premier starts at $4.08/month for 12 months and allows 3-5 simultaneous connections, unlimited data usage, NAT firewall and Chameleon protocol.
VyprVPN basic is $4.08/mo for 12 months and it allows 3 simultaneous connections and unlimited data. The most popular package is VyprVPN premium which is $5.83/month for 12 months, which allows 5 simultaneous connections, unlimited data, NAT firewall, and Chameleon.
If you’re interested in VyprVPN you are most likely interested in Chameleon. Chameleon is their proprietary technology that essentially disguises OpenVPN data, making it unrecognizable by DPI. This makes Vypr a truly “open internet experience.”
That being said, paying for VyprVPN basic doesn’t seem worth it to me. You can find cheaper and comparable coverage. I use VyprVPN premium, and it is super fast, super secure and stable. Enough said.
As a frequent traveler, I’m a little bit bummed that VyprVPN doesn’t have a formidable presence in the Middle East and Africa, but I can look past that, seeing as they have over 700 servers in 70 countries, and I have never come across a down server.
The fact is, more times than not you don’t want to use the local server anyway, because you want to appear outside of the country you are in. Although sometimes for work purposes I do connect to locations where VYPR only has a single server; if that was down, I could just connect to the neighboring country.
Don’t forget too, for those based in China, Vypr is one of the few services that is able to overcome the great firewall!
VyprVPN can be connected to any device, from Windows to Mac to Android and operates with systems like Linux and iOS. In addition, VyprVPN will also connect to your TV or your router, which is really nice if you still use your TV.
I stream content exclusively on my Apple devices (iPad, iPhone, Mac) and Vypr works well- although, I’ve heard through the grapevine that VyprVPN favors Android for mobile coverage- it allows OpenVPN and Chameleon, but on iOS only IPsec is available- a slight bummer.
With VyprVPN pro, you’ll be able to connect up to 5 devices simultaneously. This is great for me because I juggle between a phone, laptop and tablet, and don’t need any more connection options.
VyprVPN makes it extremely easy to sign up- all you need is an email, a password, a location and a payment method. Vypr accepts Visa, American Express, Discover, Mastercard, JCB and Alipay. No bitcoin, sorry super-sleuth users!
VyprVPN’s program is as streamlined and elegant as its website, which I appreciated. Most VPN services I’ve encountered are fairly simple to operate and VyprVPN is no different. The program is pretty intuitive, which I like and visually oriented with little charts that indicate different function’s speeds, so you know what’s going on.
Security & Privacy
Like most VPNs I’ve looked at here, VyprVPN uses military and government grade encryption, which is 256-bit. Nice and safe!
The company also assures users that it has a zero-knowledge DNS, which is actually pretty cool because- even with VPNs- there is the risk that a 3rd-party DNS could log your internet activity and/or censor certain content or webpages.
They can back this up because VyprDNS is owned and operated by Golden Frog, VyprVPN’s big brother. So, goodbye 3rd party and any potential leaks!
Clearly, VyprVPN is a no-log company, as they do not track or log your web activity outside of their website. As a zero log company, they also aren’t able to see any web traffic while you’re using their VPN service.
VyprVPN takes an extra step in that it offers multiple protocols for encryption, which is superb for added security, say when banking online or using public wifi. You can choose from a variety of fail-safes, including OpenVPN, L2TP, PPTP and Chameleon.
I usually go with Chameleon, because I feel like it’s the safest, especially when I’m on the go and have to make purchases over public wifi.
Again, Chameleon is that nifty proprietary technology that uses OpenVPN to shuffle metadata and will work to prevent DPI, VPN blocking (which I’ve seen with some VPNs when trying to access media streaming sites) and also throttling. So, you get unrestricted internet at pretty amazing speeds. A win-win.
I’ve always thought that Switzerland was a good location for a VPN provider, and I’m happy that Vypr is based out of the neutral country. Switzerland is notorious for being privacy conscious.
VyprVPN is definitely going to keep your information secure and is probably one of the best VPNs for unlocking media streaming sites, especially those that may be a little more on the salacious side or those that have been blocked by your country of residence.
As a simple TV junkie, my VPN needs are pretty relegated to catching up with my favorite shows and movies and torrenting music. Cue Chameleon’s amazing ability to prevent VPN blocking: this makes me one happy clam- I can always access previously blocked content and watch and stream as much as I’d like. The speeds are also pretty insane, in a good way.
I mentioned this above, but VyprVPN’s servers are all owned and managed by Golden Frog, the company that created Vypr, which is great news for users. They write their own code, operate all of their own hardware and have their own network, which makes everything faster and more reliable.
I love this about Vypr- especially after learning that information could be compromised by a third party DNS. No, thank you!
Speed & Performance
When I checked out what VyprVPN said about their speeds, I chuckled because it was the ever-so-predictable “fastest VPN on earth” shpiel. But I have noticed that Vypr might be onto something here, because their speeds are tremendously fast.
This definitely matters to me; I mean, I’m sure it matters to everyone, but if you’ve ever suffered through a two hour movie that streams inconsistently and slowly, you know that speed is everything.
Fortunately, VyprVPN completely delivers. I honestly think a large part of this is that they own and operate their own servers. In addition, the speed is pretty uniformly fast regardless of connection location, as far as I can tell.
As a welcome addition, VyprVPN also offers unlimited bandwidth. Bravo!
As previously stated, VyprVPN’s customer service is amazing. They are beyond speedy and always informative. I love that they’re available 24/7/365 (who doesn’t?!).
They also have a forum for users to contribute information; though I can’t really ever see myself using it, some might appreciate that.
They are available through email or Live Chat and the wait time is never long. I’ve always been able to get ahold of them within about 5 minutes or less, which is truly fantastic.
Signing Up & Getting Started
It is extremely simple. Just enter an email address, a password, a location and some payment details. However, unlike many other VPNs I’ve seen, VyprVPN doesn’t allow you to pay with bitcoin. This is unfortunate for the hyper-private.
They do allow Alipay, though, if that’s something you’re interested in using. From there, you’ll be prompted to download the program. The set up is mega-easy. Literally download, click install and start.
This is a bit of a downer. NO REFUNDS. Not one, not ever. This sort of surprises me from such a strong player in the VPN world. You’d think they would be so confident in their product that they wouldn’t have any qualms about offering refunds, but nope. You do get a 3-DAY FREE TRIAL though.
VyprVPN Review Conclusion
I love VyprVPN. I really do. I love that they offer such a secure encryption and that you can pick from security protocols. I feel super safe when browsing or buying on public networks.
Vypr customer service is good too. I’ve never had to wait long for my question to be answered in full. I appreciate this attention to customer service enormously.
The install process is plug and play and the dashboard itself very intuitive. Honestly, if I can set it up, you can set it up.
I also like that VyprVPN owns and operates its own servers because it adds an extra level of security and SPEED. It is so so fast, especially when streaming movies, tv shows, music, etc from anywhere in the world. For a media junkie like me, this is absolutely perfect.
